Adolescent Psychology

The adolescent period, perceived as a transitional stage between childhood and adulthood, is a time in which physiological and psychological changes occur. It is known as a period in which intense transformations take place. During adolescence, there are certain developmental stages that individuals must adapt to and complete.

Once these stages are completed, the individual gains an identity and transitions into adulthood. Adolescent psychology progresses quite differently during this time. Mood fluctuations experienced during this period may cause the individual to feel unsure about their emotions.

The most important skill that must be gained during this period is for the adolescent to become emotionally independent from their family, to separate, and to individuate. It is the process of becoming someone capable of making their own choices.

Adolescence Period

The adolescence period refers to the hormonal, physiological, and psychological changes experienced by children between the ages of 12 and 21. In fact, this period is sometimes referred to as the “liminal phase.” It lies between childhood and adulthood. Adolescence, the first step toward becoming an adult, begins with the disappearance of childish behaviors and the emergence of adult-like behaviors. There is a desire to belong to a group or to feel accepted.

Due to hormonal changes, sexual desires increase significantly. The adolescent, trying to understand the bodily changes they experience, also shows psychological changes. Since their behaviors are not yet fully established, they are still considered children.

What Is Adolescent Psychology?

The adolescent period, situated between childhood and adulthood, is essentially a process in which the individual tries to understand and recognize themselves. Since both physical and psychological changes occur, the adolescent attempts to make sense of themselves. Every individual during this period is in search of an identity, and by the end of adolescence, they acquire a unique identity. At the same time, the adolescent learns to become an autonomous individual capable of making independent decisions from their family.

During this time, the individual is neither a child nor an adult. In such a situation, they may take on many different identities. By trying various identities, they attempt to choose the role most suitable for themselves. Along with this, they begin to distance themselves from their family and their family’s values. This is because they are trying to create their own values and life philosophy.

What Are the Causes of Adolescent Problems?

When looking at the causes of adolescent problems, several factors that may lead to adolescent depression can be identified. Feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy may develop during this period. School performance, communication with peers, social status, sexual orientation, and family life all have significant effects during adolescence. Factors affecting adolescent psychology may occasionally cause the adolescent to feel depressed.

Due to environmental factors, adolescent depression is quite common. If emotional support is not provided during this period, the adolescent may feel extremely distressed.

What Are the Psychological Symptoms of Adolescence?

Generally, individuals experiencing adolescent depression show noticeable changes. They may feel a lack of motivation. In fact, they may isolate themselves for hours. Changes may also occur in sleeping patterns or eating habits. Psychological symptoms of adolescence include:

  • Lack of interest
  • Poor concentration
  • Excessive and inappropriate guilt
  • Headaches
  • Stomach aches
  • Irresponsible behavior
  • Weight loss
  • Rebellious behavior
  • Staying awake at night and sleeping during the day
  • Alcohol or drug use

Adolescent Problems and Their Solutions

During adolescence, physical, psychological, emotional, behavioral, social, and opposite-sex–related problems may emerge. Emotions may be felt much more intensely during this period. At the same time, the individual who is trying to understand themselves may be exposed to negative outcomes. If the problems cannot be resolved, receiving support is strongly recommended.
